NUTRITION 
While this may seem obvious, it is STILL the biggest factor in determining whether or not you are able to pack on new muscle.  Nutrition volume is important, but so is the source of your nutrition, and secondarily, timing.

Protein is the key macronutrient needed to lay down new lean tissue, as the amino acids found within are the literal building blocks of muscle. Assuring you are eating enough quality protein from complete sources is a must.

Carbohydrates also play a crucial role, not often recognized for their importance in muscle growth. Carbs create glycogen, which is required for weight training. They also provide energy to perform at a high level, as you'll need to to build muscle. Carbs increase insulin production and reduce cortisol. This results in less protein/muscle breakdown. Carbs end up being one of the biggest variables when it comes to nutrition modulation during growth and cutting phases.

Fats are essential for optimal health and performance. During a growth phase you want to keep them at a constant level, assuring you're getting enough essential fatty acids (EFA's). More fats will be used during reset phases than they will during periods of caloric surplus. When in a surplus, overconsumption of fats can result in more triglyceride storage (body fat accumulation).
TRAINING
Resistance training is where we all start when we want to grow. Maybe you grew a lot eating pizza and your moms leftovers, but before long that stops and real life hits. 

Muscle hypertrophy (growth) occurs as a result of adaptation. By stimulating your muscles in a way they are not accustomed you cause the body to respond by laying down new lean tissue - provided you are eating enough of the right nutrients. 

If you fail to stimulate and cause new adaptations then don't expect new growth. You must keep your training intense! Some variation here and there can be good, but not always necessary. In Bricklayer, you'll be exposed to a wide variety of advanced training techniques that will push you to your absolute limits.
 HORMONES
Your body doesn't want you to build a lot of muscle. It also doesn't want you to lose body fat. It wants to stay the same. Specific hormones kick in when you remain in a surplus for a long period of time, just like they can when you remain in a deficit for a long period of time. 

Appetites die down after periods of overfeeding, and increase after periods of restriction. 

Learning how to manipulate training, nutrition, and even supplementation can ultimately lead to growth and overcoming your own bodies self-imposed restrictions.
